RECIPE: Tilly’s Cauliflower, Sweet Potato and Turkey Mash

This recipe makes a great topping for your sweetie’s kibble! It’s also good if you are trying to get some weight off of your pooches—this recipe will fill them up without high-calorie or fat content.

INGREDIENTS
1 head cauliflower
1 large yam or orange sweet potato
1½ lbs lean ground turkey
2 tsp. fennel seeds

SUPPLIES
vegetable steamer
potato masher or fork

INSTRUCTIONS
1. Steam the cauliflower and sweet potato for one hour until soft enough to mash.
2. While the veggies are steaming, brown the ground turkey. Let cool.
3. Mash the steamed and softened cauliflower and sweet potato with a potato masher or fork. Let cool.
4. Combine cooled mashed vegetables, cooled ground turkey and fennel seeds, and mix well. For an additional nutritional punch, you may add two tablespoons of gelatinous chia seeds* or ground flaxseed**.

Refrigerate leftovers.

* gelatinous chia seeds: Add about ¼ cup chia seeds to one cup of water; stir and let this mixture sit for at least an hour, and the seeds will develop a gelatinous coating. You may keep this mixture in your refrigerator for about a week, adding small amounts to your dog’s kibble or using amounts specified in recipes in this book.

** ground flaxseed: You may want to ask your veterinarian about the proper amount of flaxseed to feed your dog. Flaxseed can be purchased in its natural form or in liquid, capsule or ground form; however, do not feed your dog whole flaxseed. While whole flaxseed won’t hurt your dog, it’s most likely to pass right through, undigested. Grinding the seeds with a spice or coffee grinder releases important nutrients. Refrigerating the flaxseed will keep them fresh and prevent them from becoming rancid. Grind the seeds daily or weekly and then refrigerate. You may sprinkle a teaspoon or two of ground flaxseed over your dog’s food, depending on your dog’s weight.
